The Penelopiad had its opening night!

Maladype Theatre's latest performance, The Penelopiad, is based on Margaret Atwood's unique adaptation of the myth of the Odyssey, the Trojan War, and Penelope, queen of Ithaca, the embodiment of female fidelity. The stage adaptation of the highly successful novel written in 2005 deals with the tragic fate of Penelope, who is imprisoned by Hades.

The direction of Zoltán Balázs retells the well-known ancient story from the point of view of Odysseus' experienced, brave and resourceful wife, amplifying the female aspects of the myth. The director's concept sensitively incorporates into the fabric of the performance the mysterious story of the twelve handmaidens hanged by Odysseus and his son, Telemachus, and the moral aspects of their killing.

Maladype Theater's latest show, made in a Hungarian-Macedonian-Polish co-production, is an all-art production in diverse theater genres. The director's idea, based on an unusual dramaturgy, creates a unique performance system that emphasizes the virtuoso presence of the actresses through verbal, acoustic and visual stimuli.

Gabriella Varga is the protagonist of the story dreamed up for the stage for the first time in Hungary. Her cousin Helen is brought to life by Nelli Orbán and her maids by Edina Bajkó. The music for the overall work of art is composed by the composer Adrián Kovács, whose name is associated with such emblematic performances as Liliomfi, Whose have nothing under the sky, The Dictator, The Legend of Pendragon, The Great Gatsby, Dangerous Relationships or the City of Loves.
